Computer Tips: Printing from Yahoo! Mail

Posted in

We've had several questions lately about people not being able to print from their Yahoo!

Copying Email Addresses from the Web

Recently I've had several questions about email links on the web.
Often on web sites you will see email links like someone@highlandco.org *   These links are blue and underlined like many web links are, but instead of linking you to another webpage or a message form, they usually try to open an POP email client, another program on the computer that can handle email.  These email clients are disabled on public computers, because they work by saving user information and emails on the local computer which would create a privacy problem on a public PC.  So the email links don't work when you click on them on a at the library, but you can still copy that email address
However, Be careful that you first highlight the email address displayed and then right click on the "Copy" option.   It does not work to "copy shortcut" or "open".
Once you have copied the email address (nothing will appear to happen), you can log into your web email account and create a new message pasting in the address on the TO: line.  (To paste either right click on the TO: line and select "paste" or click on the TO: line and hit CTRL+V on the keyboard.)

*not a real email address.

Protecting Your Privacy on Public computers

When you are checking your email or logging into any online account from a public computer,  it is very important to 1) log off or sign out of your account and 2) Close the browser by clicking the red X in the upper right corner of your screen.
This is very important whether you are at the library or using a public computer at a hotel when you are on vacation.  You do not want the next person who uses that computer to be able to log into your account and send email for which you might be blamed.
Also:
  * To be sure you have cleared you personal information you may also want to go to the Tools Menu in Internet Explorer and choose "Delete Browsing History".
  *  Remember to check that you have not left any open windows laying on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen that may still contain open sessions to a site where you were logged in.
   * Don't forget to take any diskettes, flash drives, or papers that you brought in with you when you leave.
