Just Shy of Harmony    Author:  Phil Gulley

In the past few years, many readers have enjoyed the Mitford Series, written by Jan Karon. The variety of characters portrayed in a small town church has captured the hearts of millions.

Phillip Gulley is a Quaker pastor who has become an author and written several books in the past few years. Two books make up what are known as the "Harmony Series".  They are Home to Harmony (2000) and Just Shy of Harmony (2002).  They are written in a similar format to the "Mitford Series" and include loosely woven stories about the members of a small, struggling Quaker church in Harmony, Indiana.

The main character, Pastor Sam Gardner, sometimes struggles with his faith as he observes the actions of his congregation. There is opinionated Dale Hinshaw, who always seems to have a solution to any dilemma as long as he can be in charge.  Fern Hampton, a very self-righteous member,  has major concerns for the church centered around issues such as the color for the new vanity which is to be installed in the women's restroom.

There are also characters who help restore the pastor's faith in the potential of people who are living their daily lives in the service of others.  Miriam and Ellis Hodge have adopted a niece who had been living in an abusive home. Jessie and Asa Peacock struggle with the moral dilemma of accepting and spending a five million dollar win in the state lottery. Wayne Fleming is struggling to raise three young children while working nights at the local grocery store and attending classes at the local college.

All the characters' lives portrayed in these two books are interwoven into a fast reading, heart warming experience for the reader. Gulley has written these books with a little more cynicism than is found in the "Mitford" books.  However,  The "Harmony Series" may be more realistic as to how different personalities interact in a small-town congregation. The situations and emotions experienced by Pastor Sam Gardner may be indicative of what many contemporary pastors experience in their ministries.  What makes these books work is the inclusion of humor which at times makes the reader laugh out loud.  In the midst of all the daily occurrences in Harmony, people do find something to smile about.
