Free Hands-on Basic Computer Classes

We offer 4 free basic computer classes at the Highland County District Libraries. Classes are taught at the Senior Center in Hillsboro and also at our branch libraries on a rotating basis.  Leave your name and phone number at the  library if you are interested in attending.  Advance Registration is Required. (You do not need to be a Senior Citizen to take the computer class.)

"I've Never Touched a Computer Before" - Part One

A basic hands-on introduction to using a Windows XP computer.
Includes: Parts Of The Computer, Using a Mouse,  Opening Files, Creating Files, Copying, Cutting, And Pasting, Saving Files To a USB Flash Memory device, & Basic Features of Microsoft Windows XP

"I've Never Touched a Computer Before" -- Part Two

A continuation of the basic hands-on introduction to using a Windows computer.
Includes: Review and Practice of Basic Computing Skills and More Problems You May Encounter, Time is also left for Individual Questions.
Can be taken without the first class if the student is comfortable with a mouse.

Internet 1 : Finding Information on the World Wide Web

Basic Web Navigation skills and tools for the Beginner. Includes: The basics of how to get around on the web;  The basics of Internet Safety; and some definitions of basic terms. (Note: This workshop does not cover email, except in the most general terms.)
Can be taken without the first classes if the student is comfortable with a mouse.

Internet 2 : Web Destinations

Interesting Web Resources, how to find them and use them. Includes finding and using magazine databases, good encyclopedias, automobile repair information and historical information.  Includes an introduction to databases that  OPLIN gives Ohioans access to from their home computers and other information rich databases on the web.  There is also usually time for discussion of  questions that were not answered in the previous classes.

Scheduling an OPEN Computer Lab

For more advanced topics such as use of Office 2000 and 2003 go beyond the basics with step by step computer based  instruction software. We  have computers available with tutorial programs installed that can be scheduled for use in the library, by calling the Hillsboro Library at 393-3114 and talking to the Computer Services Librarian. Each computer has training software installed that helps the user learn about Microsoft Office®, Microsoft Windows®, Dreamweaver®, Internet Explorer® and other software with practice using them.
