Selective Web Indexes

Directories focusing particular kinds of information.

The Ohio Public Library Information Network   is a great state resource for information.

The Internet Public Library has found organized and described over 27,000 "quality information resources".

Blue Web'n - Links to More than 1800 web sites sorted by Grade Level, Subject, and type of use or format.  Very handy for teachers.

For Other Selective Directories:

Beaucoup! --directory of directories 2000+ Search engines, indices, & directories

Find Tutorials - directory of free tutorials on computer related topics

Wiki's - What if you could just ask everyone what you want to know? Wiki sites are collaborative information resources that allow anyone to edit and add to information.  Wikis  are not web search tools as such, but when searching for information  some of these resources that "anyone can edit" can be timely.  Wikipedia.org is a notable example.  Their About section contains a helpful pointer about quality:
"older articles tend to be more comprehensive and balanced, while newer articles may still contain significant misinformation, unencyclopedic content, or vandalism." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About, a project of the Wikipedia Foundation; June 24, 2006)
Similar projects include Yahoo! Answers  where you can post questions to be answered by any yahoo out there.  Makes for interesting reading at least.

*Tips for Search Engines

Search engines are a good place to start if you have a very narrow topic or if you need to find all the web pages that you can on a topic.
Search engines search huge databases containing the text of web pages
No one engine searches all of the web.  If you cannot find what you want on one search engine, try another
Read the 'Help' on search engines.
