What is the “Summer Reading Program”?

The library offers special programming to encourage kids to continue building their reading skills over the summer.  The Summer reading club requires no commitment other than the time your child spends reading or being read to by someone else. Everything is free! The Summer Reading Program continues for 8-10 weeks.

When do we need to be here?

    Children do not have to follow a schedule or be at the library on particular days or times.  It does not matter if they will be gone several weeks to camp or on vacation.  Just sign up and keep a record of summer reading.  Bring the reading record in to the library when you visit and your child will receive a sticker, a stamp and an entry slip for a prize drawing.

Who can join the Summer Reading Program?

Your child does not have to be able to read alone to enjoy being in the club!  Summer Reading is also for toddlers and preschoolers who are learning to love being read to by their caregivers.  Children of all ages can enjoy Summer Reading.  Each of our libraries has a Teen Program this summer and Adults can also enter for drawings.

How Does a Child Join?

    Bring your child to the library at any time after the beginning of the Summer Reading Program and pick up a Log to keep track of reading during the summer and fill out entries for drawings each time you come in.  Remember it is free and easy to join.

What is Story Time?

Each library in the Highland County District Library System provides story times during the year.  Attendance is not required to be in the Summer Reading Program!

During story times, children listen to stories and participate in activities related to the theme of the stories.  Sometimes the children do crafts related to the theme of the stories.  Sometimes there are special guests like Park Rangers or Bee Keepers that have interesting stories to tell.
